THE SHORT ANSWER
To work towards an A or A* in Business, learn the concepts, practise applying them to unfamiliar organisations, show accurate calculations and justify decisions using the case. Build answers around consequences for the specific business, then explain the condition that could change your recommendation.
A business answer can sound sensible and still say very little about the business in the question. To improve, connect a concept to a specific fact, explain the consequence and make a decision supported by the evidence.
Check your exam year carefully. Cambridge O Level Business Studies 7115 applies in 2026; Business 7081 is first assessed in June 2027. The updated course includes changes to content and assessment objectives. Use the correct syllabus and specimen materials instead of assuming every older question matches your course.
Turn definitions into usable decisions
Knowing a definition is the beginning of revision. For each concept, add a short example and a decision it might influence. For cash flow, consider whether a business can pay its suppliers on time. For market research, consider which uncertainty the business is trying to reduce.
Use small local examples to understand ideas, such as a stationery shop or a tutoring service, then switch contexts. The exam may describe a manufacturer, retailer or service provider with different constraints. Your reasoning should adapt rather than repeat a memorised paragraph.
Make the case detail do real work
Mentioning a business name is not enough application. Select a relevant fact, explain what it means for a decision and connect it to a likely outcome. A small firm with limited cash may face a different choice from a large firm with spare production capacity.
When reading a case, mark objectives, customers, resources and constraints. These categories help you find evidence quickly. Avoid inventing demand, profit or staff reactions that the case does not establish; use conditional language when an outcome depends on an assumption.
Combine calculations with interpretation
Practise the formulas required by your exam-year syllabus. Write the formula, substitute the correct values and label the result. Be especially careful about percentages, time periods and whether a figure represents revenue, profit or cash.
Then add an interpretation. A calculation becomes more useful when you explain what it suggests for the business. If a margin falls, investigate possible reasons rather than assuming sales have fallen. A business can increase sales while its costs rise even faster.
Evaluate by choosing a deciding factor
A balanced answer should do more than list advantages and disadvantages. Compare the options against the stated objective, identify the strongest reason and explain why it matters more in this case. A clear recommendation can still acknowledge a limitation.
For timed practice, plan a decision before writing the conclusion. Ask what information could change it: expected demand, available cash, capacity or the reliability of research. This produces a focused judgement rather than ending every answer with a vague “it depends”.
PUT THE IDEA TO WORK
Original mini example: a print shop’s decision
Try this: A small print shop wants to buy faster equipment. It has limited cash and several confirmed short-term orders. What should a recommendation consider?
Faster equipment could help complete confirmed orders sooner, potentially improving service and freeing capacity. This links the option to an actual feature of the case.
The purchase could also leave too little cash for paper, wages or other near-term payments. Confirmed sales do not remove the need to fund production before customers pay.
A reasoned recommendation would compare the cash timing and equipment cost with the benefit of extra capacity, and consider whether an alternative such as short-term outsourcing meets the immediate need.
Take it into your next answer: Use the business’s constraint to decide which argument matters most.

Your four-week revision plan
Use this as a focused revision cycle alongside your lessons. If you are still learning the course, give unfamiliar topics more time before attempting full papers.
- Week 1
Build usable concepts
- Retrieve key definitions and attach a different business example to each.
- Confirm whether you need the 2026 or 2027-onwards specification.
- Week 2
Apply and calculate
- Complete short case questions with one clearly developed chain each.
- Practise required calculations and explain every result in context.
- Week 3
Develop evaluation
- Compare two options against an objective and a constraint.
- Write timed recommendations that include a reasoned limitation.
- Week 4
Test unfamiliar cases
- Complete a suitable mock and review weak application.
- Rewrite selected answers using fewer generic statements and more relevant evidence.

Your questions, answered
Can I use examples from Bangladesh?+
They can help you learn, but an examination answer should respond to the business and evidence provided. Do not replace the case with an unrelated example.
Do longer answers earn higher marks?+
Length alone does not create application or evaluation. Develop relevant ideas clearly and use the command word and mark allocation to judge the required depth.
Can 7115 past papers still help with 7081?+
Some concepts and skills remain useful, but the course changes from 2027. Check questions against the updated syllabus and use its specimen materials to understand the intended assessment.
