THE SHORT ANSWER

Aim for A or A* in IGCSE Business by applying concepts to case evidence, developing cause-and-effect analysis and making justified decisions with clear conditions.

A Business answer can contain the right definition and still miss the real decision in the question. To improve, move beyond naming a concept: explain what it would mean for the particular business, use the evidence and judge the trade-off.

Check your exam year carefully. Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies 0450 is the 2026 course; the title becomes Business and the code becomes 0264 for first assessment in March 2027. The advice here builds transferable skills, while your syllabus and specimen papers should match your entry.

Learn a concept together with its business use

For each idea, write a definition, a situation where it matters and a possible limitation. For example, an overdraft can help cover a short-term cash gap, but it does not automatically solve an unprofitable business model. This approach turns recall into usable knowledge.

Group related ideas so that you can choose between them: recruitment methods, sources of finance, promotion methods or production approaches. Explain what would make one option more suitable for a small local business than for a large established firm.

Apply the case rather than repeating its name

Underline information that could change a decision: available finance, customer profile, staff skills, capacity or the owner’s objective. Use that detail in the reasoning. Merely inserting the company name into a generic paragraph does not show why the point matters.

A clothing shop selling to students might value affordable promotion and fast response to trends. A manufacturer supplying other businesses may prioritise reliability and production capacity. Let the case determine which consequences you discuss.

Develop a chain of consequences

After making a point, ask “so what happens next?” Training may improve employee skill, which may reduce mistakes, which may lower waste costs. The chain should be plausible and relevant, not a list of every possible benefit.

When the question asks for analysis, give enough explanation to connect the action to the outcome. Keep each paragraph focused on one main reason. Extra definitions do not compensate for a missing link between the business decision and its effect.

Use numbers as evidence for decisions

Practise calculations with clearly labelled workings. Then explain the meaning of the answer: what does a change in cost, profit margin or break-even output suggest for this business? A number becomes useful when it helps answer the question.

Check the formulas and terminology in your exam-year syllabus, especially across the 2027 change. Do not assume that an older revision card contains the exact list required for your entry. Keep currency, time period and units consistent.

Make evaluation conditional and specific

A justified recommendation weighs the strongest relevant reasons and identifies what the decision depends on. It should answer the question rather than simply repeat both sides. Explain why one consideration matters more in this case, and what new information could change your conclusion.

Practise with short timed case responses and mark them against the correct materials. Keep a log of unsupported claims, missing application and weak conclusions. Repair those habits before attempting another complete paper.

PUT THE IDEA TO WORK

Original practice: choose a promotion method

Try this: A small Dhaka stationery shop has a limited promotional budget and wants more nearby students to visit. Should it spend the entire budget on a national television advertisement?

A national advertisement could reach many people, but most viewers may live too far away to become customers. Its broad reach may therefore offer poor value for this shop’s local objective.

A targeted local promotion could be more suitable if it reaches students within travelling distance at lower cost. The owner should compare likely response and cost, rather than assume every online promotion works.

The recommendation depends on the available channels, audience and budget. The decisive issue is useful local reach, not simply the largest possible audience.

Take it into your next answer: Evaluation explains why a factor matters more for this particular decision.

Common mistakes—and how to fix them

Using the business name as the only application

Connect a specific case fact to the consequence you predict.

Making a recommendation without a reason

Identify the decisive consideration and explain why it outweighs the alternative here.

Claiming higher revenue always means higher profit

Consider how costs change and distinguish sales income from profit.

Your four-week revision plan

Use this as a focused revision cycle alongside your lessons. If you are still learning the course, give unfamiliar topics more time before attempting full papers.

  1. Week 1

    Make knowledge usable

    • Build definition–application–limitation notes.
    • Check whether your entry is 0450 or 0264 and collect matching materials.
  2. Week 2

    Develop analysis

    • Write short chains from action to business outcome.
    • Practise applying two case facts in each relevant response.
  3. Week 3

    Use evidence

    • Calculate business measures and interpret the results.
    • Compare options using the business objective and constraints.
  4. Week 4

    Sharpen judgement

    • Attempt timed case-study questions.
    • Rewrite weak conclusions with a justified, conditional recommendation.

Your questions, answered

Should I memorise model answers?+

Use examples to study how reasoning works, then answer a different case. Memorised paragraphs often ignore the evidence and decision in the new question.

Can I use examples from Bangladesh?+

They can help you understand concepts during revision. In an exam case question, prioritise the evidence provided rather than replacing it with an unrelated local example.

Can I use 0450 papers for a 0264 exam?+

Selected questions can provide practice, but the syllabus and assessment have changed. Use 0264 specimen materials and your teacher’s guidance to check relevance.
