THE SHORT ANSWER
To work towards an A or A* in Mathematics D, secure algebra and number skills, practise without topic labels, show every important step and revisit errors after a delay. Combine non-calculator fluency with careful calculator work, then use timed papers to find the specific skills that still cost marks.
You can understand a maths lesson and still freeze when a familiar method appears inside an unfamiliar question. Improving in Mathematics D means training two skills together: carrying out methods accurately and deciding which method a problem needs.
This guide is for Cambridge O Level Mathematics (Syllabus D), code 4024. Start with the syllabus for your examination year; the current course includes work with and without a calculator. The goal is a dependable process you can use when the wording changes.
Find the prerequisite behind each difficult topic
Before tackling a difficult trigonometry question, check that you can rearrange an equation, substitute values and handle fractions. A weak prerequisite can make an entire topic feel impossible. Make a short diagnostic covering fractions, indices, percentages, equations and graphs, then identify which errors occur more than once.
Replace a vague target such as “revise algebra” with a visible task: solve six equations involving fractions and explain each rearrangement. Repeat the task with different numbers two days later. Being able to follow a solution is useful; being able to produce it independently is the real checkpoint.
Practise choosing a method
Topic worksheets tell you which tool to use before you begin. Mixed practice removes that help. Take a small selection involving ratio, percentages, geometry and probability. For each question, write a first line explaining the mathematical relationship before calculating anything.
Underline the quantity requested and draw a diagram when it makes relationships clearer. Ask whether your answer should be a length, an area, a probability or a rate. This prevents correct arithmetic from answering the wrong question and makes your working easier to check.
Make calculator and non-calculator sessions different
For non-calculator practice, work on equivalent fractions, exact values, sensible cancellation and efficient written arithmetic. Do not reach for a device when a calculation looks awkward; first look for a factor or a simpler representation.
For calculator practice, rehearse brackets, negative numbers, powers and the required angle mode. Estimate the size of an answer before entering it. Keep intermediate values unrounded and apply the requested accuracy at the end, unless the question explicitly tells you otherwise.
Use mock papers as a feedback system
After each timed paper, sort lost marks into method choice, algebra, arithmetic, interpretation and unfinished work. Pick the two largest categories for your next revision sessions. Copying a complete worked answer can hide the exact point where your reasoning stopped.
Instead, redo the question from a blank page, explain the correction and attempt a nearby variation. Keep a weekly total of repeated error types. A falling number of repeated mistakes is more informative than simply counting how many papers you have completed.
PUT THE IDEA TO WORK
Original mini example: reverse percentages
Try this: A study desk costs ৳2,160 after a 10% discount. Find its price before the discount.
After the discount, the customer pays 90% of the original price. Let the original price be p, so 0.90p = 2160.
Divide by 0.90 to obtain p = 2400. Check the result: 10% of ৳2,400 is ৳240, and ৳2,400 − ৳240 = ৳2,160.
Adding 10% of the discounted price gives ৳2,376, which is wrong because the percentage has been applied to a different starting amount.
Take it into your next answer: Name the original quantity before choosing a percentage operation.

Common mistakes—and how to fix them
Only practising the hardest questions
Secure routine methods too; small errors across many accessible questions accumulate.
Writing only the calculator answer
Show the equation, substitution and essential working so your reasoning is visible.
Checking by repeating identical working
Substitute your answer back or estimate independently to avoid repeating the same mistake.
Your four-week revision plan
Use this as a focused revision cycle alongside your lessons. If you are still learning the course, give unfamiliar topics more time before attempting full papers.
- Week 1
Repair foundations
- Diagnose fractions, algebra and percentages without notes.
- Build short daily drills around your two weakest prerequisite skills.
- Week 2
Connect topics
- Alternate geometry and statistics with mixed algebra questions.
- Explain aloud why each chosen method fits the problem.
- Week 3
Practise under time
- Complete a suitable timed paper using its actual calculator rules.
- Redo every missed method without looking at your correction.
- Week 4
Make performance consistent
- Attempt fresh mixed questions and a second timed paper.
- Review recurring errors and practise finishing with a brief accuracy check.
YOUR NEXT STEP
Make your revision
easier to organise.
Build a consistent routine with the AsifSir.com Mathematics D set at ৳1,800: a visual guide to revisit relationships, a study guide for focused revision and 10 original mock exam papers for practice. Use each paper to identify what to study next, then return to the topic with a clear target.

Your questions, answered
Is Mathematics D the same as Additional Mathematics?+
No. Mathematics D 4024 and Additional Mathematics 4037 are different qualifications. Confirm the code on your school entry and choose your study set accordingly.
How many past papers should I complete?+
Use as many as you can review properly. Three carefully corrected papers can teach more than ten rushed papers with no follow-up. Mix recent suitable papers with targeted practice.
What percentage guarantees an A*?+
There is no universal raw percentage that guarantees the grade. Thresholds depend on the examination series and component combination. Focus on improving your raw marks and use official thresholds only for the matching papers.
