THE SHORT ANSWER

Learn concepts and calculations, then apply them to the case using clear chains of cause and effect. Evaluate recommendations against the business’s objectives, resources and constraints. At A2, connect marketing, operations, people and finance instead of treating a strategic decision as one isolated topic.

Business answers improve when you stop collecting advantages and disadvantages and start making decisions for a particular organisation. A useful point explains what might change, why it matters and whether the case evidence makes that outcome likely.

For Cambridge 9609, aim at an A for AS and an A* for the full A Level. The advanced course places greater emphasis on strategy, so your revision should develop connected judgement as well as accurate knowledge.

Read the case for decision-changing evidence

Underline facts that could change a recommendation: available cash, capacity, market conditions, employee skills or the owner’s objectives. Do not merely repeat the company name in a generic paragraph. Explain how a specific fact makes the effect stronger, weaker or less certain.

At AS, practise a short chain: a decision changes an activity, the change affects a business measure, and that measure matters to an objective. For example, training may reduce production errors, which can reduce waste and help a firm competing on quality. The case should determine whether that chain is credible.

Make calculations part of the argument

For each ratio or financial measure in your syllabus, learn what its result means as well as how to calculate it. Write units and show workings. A percentage, a monetary amount and a time period should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.

After calculating, compare with a relevant figure or explain a limitation. A rise in sales does not automatically mean higher profit; a profitable business can still face cash-flow pressure. Use numbers to test a claim rather than dropping them into the answer as decoration.

At A2, connect the functional areas

A strategic choice may require marketing demand, operational capacity, finance and people to work together. Draw a simple map of those links before writing. If expansion needs equipment, consider funding and cash timing; if it needs a different service standard, consider recruitment and training.

Evaluation should identify a decisive condition. Instead of writing it depends and stopping, say what it depends on and why that factor changes the decision. Rank the evidence. A small promotional benefit may matter less than a severe funding constraint when the business cannot afford the investment.

Build a conclusion that answers the question

For longer responses, plan two developed arguments and a reasoned judgement rather than a long list of shallow points. Keep returning to the actual decision or claim in the question. Explain why the preferred option is stronger in this case and acknowledge the main limitation.

Use timed practice to find where your answers lose focus. After marking, highlight knowledge, application, analysis and judgement in different ways. If most of a paragraph is definition, rewrite it around a case fact and a consequence. A good plan should help you decide what to leave out.

PUT THE IDEA TO WORK

Mini example: choose a financing option in context

Try this: A small printing business needs a machine that will be used for five years. It has little spare cash but predictable orders. How might you assess a loan?

A loan could spread the cost and allow the machine to generate revenue while it is being paid for. Predictable orders may make repayment planning more credible.

However, interest and repayments create cash commitments. Compare the expected cash generated with those payments and consider demand falling. The machine’s usefulness over several years supports considering longer-term finance, but it does not prove a loan is affordable.

Take it into your next answer: Connect the financing choice to the asset, cash timing and risk. “Loans are good because the business gets money” is too shallow.

Common mistakes—and how to fix them

Repeating the business name as application.

Use a specific case fact and explain how it changes the argument.

Ending every answer with an unsupported it depends.

Identify the most important condition and show which option it favours.

Treating profit and cash as the same thing.

Track when cash enters and leaves separately from whether revenue exceeds expenses.

Your four-week revision plan

Use this as a focused revision cycle alongside your lessons. If you are still learning the course, give unfamiliar topics more time before attempting full papers.

  1. Week 1

    Secure concepts and measures

    • Test definitions and financial calculations.
    • Create short cause-and-effect explanations for weak topics.
  2. Week 2

    Apply to unfamiliar cases

    • Write paragraphs using specific case evidence.
    • Compare two recommendations for the same objective.
  3. Week 3

    Develop strategic judgement

    • Complete timed longer responses for your stage.
    • Connect operations, marketing, people and finance in each major decision.
  4. Week 4

    Improve conclusions

    • Rewrite weak judgements after marking.
    • Practise selecting the most decisive evidence within the time available.

Your questions, answered

Do I need real business examples in every answer?+

Use the evidence required by the question. In a case-based task, analyse the supplied business before introducing outside examples that may distract from it.

How long should an evaluation be?+

Make it long enough to justify a judgement with relevant evidence. A focused conclusion with a decisive condition is stronger than a long repetition of earlier points.

How is A2 different from AS?+

Continue building application and analysis, but practise integrating functional areas and evaluating strategic choices. Check your examination-year syllabus for the exact requirements.
