THE SHORT ANSWER
Build fluent algebra, explain every method, and alternate unfamiliar problems with targeted correction. Separate pure mathematics from your chosen mechanics and statistics components, then practise the actual combination you will enter. An error log is useful only when you return to solve its questions unaided.
An A in Cambridge AS Mathematics, followed by an A* in the full A Level, begins with something less dramatic than doing the hardest question in the book: making your ordinary algebra dependable. A small rearrangement error can derail an otherwise correct calculus or mechanics solution.
This plan is for students in Bangladesh taking 9709. AS awards A as its highest grade; A* belongs to the full A Level. Your school’s component route determines which applied mathematics you need.
Start with your component route
Cambridge offers different AS and full A Level routes. Ask your teacher to identify your exact components before buying papers or making a timetable. A friend studying a different applied combination may need material that is outside your own entry. Use the official syllabus for your examination year, including any update.
Create a one-page map with three columns: can solve independently, need a hint, and cannot start. Test yourself with a short question before choosing the column. Feeling familiar with a worked solution is weaker evidence than producing a correct solution from a blank page.
Make AS algebra reliable
Use short daily drills for fractions, indices, quadratics, trigonometric identities and rearranging equations. Write one transformation per line. State restrictions when dividing by an expression or taking a logarithm; otherwise you can remove valid solutions or introduce impossible ones. Check substituted answers in the original equation.
For calculus, say what the derivative or integral represents before calculating. A gradient problem, a stationary-point problem and an area problem may all involve the same function but require different endpoints. Sketching the graph often exposes a sign error before the calculator does.
At A2, practise choosing the method
A2 revision should include mixed questions without chapter headings. Those headings normally give away the method. Before calculating, write a short plan: substitution, integration by parts, a trigonometric identity, or a suitable distribution. Afterwards explain why the alternative method would be longer or unsuitable.
Keep applied practice distinct. In mechanics, draw the situation and choose a positive direction before writing equations. In statistics, define the random variable and check the model assumptions before selecting a formula. A correct calculation cannot rescue a model that answers a different question.
Turn a marked paper into a repair session
Classify lost marks as a knowledge gap, wrong method, algebra slip, or incomplete explanation. Repair the largest recurring category first. Rework the failed question after a break, then try a different question with the same underlying idea. Copying the mark scheme does not demonstrate that the gap has closed.
Use official thresholds only for the matching examination series and component combination. There is no permanent percentage that guarantees an A*. Track improvement through method accuracy, completion and the number of questions you can now start without help.
PUT THE IDEA TO WORK
Mini example: a stationary point is not the whole answer
Try this: For f(x) = x³ − 3x² + 2, find and classify the stationary points.
Differentiate: f′(x) = 3x² − 6x = 3x(x − 2), so the stationary x-values are 0 and 2.
Substitute into the original function to obtain (0, 2) and (2, −2). Then f″(x) = 6x − 6: it is negative at 0 and positive at 2, giving a local maximum and minimum respectively.
Take it into your next answer: A complete answer needs coordinates and a justified classification. Finding two x-values alone leaves the task unfinished.

Common mistakes—and how to fix them
Doing only favourite pure topics.
Allocate separate sessions to every component in your entry, especially the applied topic you avoid.
Rounding intermediate values.
Keep exact fractions or full calculator precision until the final stated accuracy.
Reading solutions immediately when stuck.
Write what is known and attempt a first step before consulting one targeted hint.
Your four-week revision plan
Use this as a focused revision cycle alongside your lessons. If you are still learning the course, give unfamiliar topics more time before attempting full papers.
- Week 1
Audit the foundations
- Confirm components and exam year.
- Test algebra and trigonometry; repair the three weakest methods.
- Week 2
Connect methods
- Mix differentiation, integration and equation-solving.
- Complete two focused applied-topic sessions and review model assumptions.
- Week 3
Practise under time
- Attempt unseen component papers under their stated conditions.
- Redo errors and explain the corrected method aloud.
- Week 4
Close recurring gaps
- Alternate mixed timed questions with your error log.
- Check calculator routines and presentation; protect sleep before the exam.
YOUR NEXT STEP
Make your revision
easier to organise.
Use the AsifSir.com Mathematics visual guide to reconnect ideas, the study guide to revisit methods, and the 10 mock exam papers to test your decisions under time. AS and A2 sets are ৳1,800 each, or ৳3,600 together. Choose the correct stage and use the resources alongside the official 9709 syllabus and your lessons.
AS and A2 are separate sets: ৳1,800 each, or ৳3,600 for both stages.

Your questions, answered
Can I get an A* at AS?+
No. A is the highest AS grade. Work towards secure AS performance while remembering that the full A Level result has its own assessment and grading requirements.
How many papers should I complete?+
Complete as many as you can review properly. One paper followed by careful correction and a fresh transfer question can be more productive than several papers marked and forgotten.
Should I study every applied component?+
Follow your registered route. Your teacher or examination centre should confirm which mechanics and statistics papers belong to your qualification.
