THE SHORT ANSWER

To aim for an A or A* in Accounting, secure double entry, understand both effects of adjustments and present workings clearly. Combine numerical practice with interpretation and explanations. Review errors by their cause, especially classification, timing and treatment of balances.

Accounting becomes much less confusing when every number has a reason and every adjustment has an effect you can explain. The goal is not to memorise the appearance of a completed statement; it is to understand how information moves into it.

For Cambridge O Level Accounting 7707, choose the syllabus for your exam year. The 2027–2029 version changes some content, ratios and the multiple-choice assessment. Practise using the correct terminology and requirements rather than treating every old paper as an exact template.

Explain the transaction before posting it

For each transaction, identify the accounts affected and whether each asset, liability, capital, income or expense changes. Then decide the debit and credit. A memorised rule is easier to apply reliably when you understand the economic event behind it.

Practise contrasting similar transactions: buying goods for resale versus buying equipment, or receiving a loan versus earning revenue. Misclassification can produce a statement that adds up correctly while still being conceptually wrong. Explain why each item belongs in its category.

Trace both sides of an adjustment

For accruals, prepayments, depreciation and inventory adjustments, ask which accounting period the item belongs to and what remains at the reporting date. Write a short working before entering the final figure. This separates the calculation from the presentation.

After calculating an adjustment, identify its effects on profit and the statement of financial position where applicable. Do not stop when you have changed one figure. A checklist of the two related effects can prevent a correct calculation from becoming an incomplete answer.

Present workings so you can check them

Use clear labels, dates and an organised layout. Show how an amount was calculated even when the final statement needs only one number. If a figure is wrong, a transparent working helps you locate the mistake without rebuilding the entire answer.

Develop quick reasonableness checks. Compare a balance with the original data, reconsider unusually large percentages and ask whether an adjustment should increase or decrease an expense. These checks are more useful than simply adding the same column twice.

Interpret numbers with a comparison

When discussing performance, connect the calculated ratio or figure to a relevant comparison and a possible reason. Distinguish a movement in profitability from a movement in liquidity. A business may report profit while having difficulty meeting payments.

Avoid claiming that one ratio proves a business is successful. Consider the limits of the information, differences between businesses and the context supplied. In a mock-paper review, practise writing the explanation as carefully as the calculation; both are part of accounting understanding.

PUT THE IDEA TO WORK

Original mini example: the expense belongs to a period

Try this: A business paid ৳9,000 for rent during the year. This includes ৳1,000 for the next year. A further ৳600 for the current year remains unpaid. Calculate the current-year rent expense.

Remove the next-year amount from the cash paid because it does not belong to the current accounting period. Add the current-year amount still owed.

Rent expense = 9,000 − 1,000 + 600 = ৳8,600. The calculation follows the period to which the expense relates, not just when cash moved.

The ৳1,000 prepayment and ৳600 accrual also represent separate year-end balances. Treating only the expense figure would leave the adjustment incomplete in a full statements question.

Take it into your next answer: Separate payment timing from the period in which the expense is recognised.

Common mistakes—and how to fix them

Assuming a balanced trial balance proves accuracy

Some errors leave debits and credits equal. Review classification and omissions too.

Reversing accruals and prepayments

Explain in words what is owed or paid in advance before calculating.

Giving a ratio without interpretation

State what the result suggests and compare it with relevant information.

Your four-week revision plan

Use this as a focused revision cycle alongside your lessons. If you are still learning the course, give unfamiliar topics more time before attempting full papers.

  1. Week 1

    Repair double entry

    • Classify contrasting transactions and explain both account effects.
    • Practise ledger entries and investigate each trial-balance error.
  2. Week 2

    Master adjustments

    • Work through accruals, prepayments and depreciation with clear calculations.
    • Name every related effect before preparing a statement.
  3. Week 3

    Interpret and present

    • Prepare financial statements with labelled supporting workings.
    • Practise ratios and short comments using the exam-year requirements.
  4. Week 4

    Rehearse complete questions

    • Attempt a suitable mock including numerical and written questions.
    • Retest weak adjustments with different values and a changed reporting date.

Your questions, answered

Do I need advanced mathematics for Accounting?+

Clear arithmetic, percentages and logical classification are more useful at this level than advanced mathematics. The challenge is often choosing the correct treatment and explaining it.

Why do I make mistakes despite knowing the layout?+

A familiar layout can hide uncertainty about an adjustment. Work out the accounting treatment first and use the layout to communicate it, rather than filling boxes from memory.

Can I use older papers for a 2027 exam?+

They can provide useful practice, but the syllabus and assessment change in 2027. Check the updated content and ratios, and use the relevant specimen materials for format.
