THE SHORT ANSWER
Understand the double-entry logic behind adjustments, organise clear workings and check totals systematically. Practise both financial accounting and cost or management accounting for your stage. At A2, develop interpretation and evaluation so a calculation becomes evidence rather than an unexplained final number.
Accounting rewards a combination of dependable technique and sensible interpretation. A balanced statement may still contain a conceptual error, while a correct ratio is incomplete if you cannot explain what it suggests about the business.
For Cambridge 9706, the goal is an A at AS and an A* in the full A Level. Build a method that makes every adjustment traceable, then practise using the resulting information to support a decision.
Understand each adjustment before placing it
For an adjustment, identify which accounts change and why. Ask whether it affects an asset, liability, equity, income or expense, and whether it belongs to the current accounting period. This prevents familiar-looking figures being inserted into the wrong statement.
At AS, make basic entries, accruals, prepayments, depreciation and error correction reliable. Use small examples to trace the effect on profit and financial position. If two adjustments both reduce profit, explain their different causes rather than treating them as interchangeable deductions.
Organise workings so mistakes can be found
Give each working a short label and carry its result clearly into the final statement. Keep additions and deductions aligned. When a number looks wrong, return to the relevant working instead of restarting the entire question. Clear presentation supports both accuracy and efficient checking.
Use checks that fit the task: accounting equations, reconciliations, control totals or a reasonableness comparison. A statement balancing is useful evidence, but it does not prove every classification is correct. Some errors leave totals equal while still misrepresenting the underlying transaction.
Use management information to compare choices
For cost and management accounting, identify the decision being made before selecting a technique. Distinguish relevant changes from costs that will occur regardless of the decision. In practice questions, explain assumptions such as a stable selling price or a realistic capacity limit.
At A2, give interpretation the same attention as calculations. Compare profitability, liquidity or investment information with suitable context, and acknowledge what the figures cannot tell you. A single improved ratio does not establish that every part of the business has become healthier.
Separate technique errors from reading errors
After marking a question, record whether the problem came from a missing concept, an incorrect entry, arithmetic or overlooked wording. Repair the cause with a small exercise, then return to a fuller question. Repeating long papers without fixing an accrual misunderstanding can reproduce the same loss of marks.
During timed work, mark each adjustment when it has been used and check whether it has more than one effect. Reserve time to inspect signs, dates, headings and units. Use current 9706 syllabus requirements when selecting older papers so your practice matches your examination stage.
PUT THE IDEA TO WORK
Mini example: an accrual changes the expense
Try this: A business paid rent of ৳120,000 during the year. Rent owing at the start was ৳10,000 and rent owing at the end was ৳15,000. What is the rent expense for the year?
The cash paid includes settlement of the opening amount owing, so remove ৳10,000 from this year’s expense calculation. Add the closing ৳15,000 because it relates to the current year but has not yet been paid.
Rent expense is ৳120,000 − ৳10,000 + ৳15,000 = ৳125,000. The closing amount owing is also a liability at the reporting date.
Take it into your next answer: Cash paid and expense are different measures. Explain the accounting period each amount belongs to before applying a formula.

YOUR NEXT STEP
Make your revision
easier to organise.
AsifSir.com Accounting sets provide a visual guide to relationships, a study guide for systematic revision and 10 mock exam papers for practice. Choose AS or A2 at ৳1,800 each. After a mock, use your workings to identify the exact concept or adjustment to revisit, then solve a fresh question independently.
AS and A2 are separate sets: ৳1,800 each, or ৳3,600 for both stages.

Your questions, answered
Should I memorise statement formats?+
Learn the required structure, but also understand why each item belongs there. That understanding helps when a question changes the order or form of the information.
How do I avoid careless arithmetic mistakes?+
Use labelled workings, estimate the likely result and check with an appropriate reconciliation or equation. A consistent process is more useful than simply promising to be careful.
Is Accounting only calculation?+
No. The qualification includes applying, analysing and evaluating accounting information. Practise explaining the meaning and limitations of your numerical results.
