THE SHORT ANSWER
Learn concepts through concrete examples, connect theories to evidence and practise comparing explanations. Apply research methods to the social setting in the question. At A2, build sustained arguments within your selected topics, with evaluation throughout rather than an unsupported final paragraph.
A strong Sociology essay does more than name theories. It uses concepts and evidence to explain a social pattern, considers alternative accounts and reaches a judgement that responds to the question. The best revision therefore develops arguments as well as memory.
This Cambridge 9699 plan targets an A at AS and an A* in the full A Level. Check your examination-year syllabus: Cambridge publishes a 2027–2028 edition alongside the earlier 2024–2026 materials.
Use sociological concepts precisely
For each concept, write a definition, an example and a non-example. This helps you distinguish socialisation from social control, or a role from a status, instead of using related terms interchangeably. Explain how a concept helps account for a pattern rather than adding it as a label.
At AS, build a clear map of major perspectives and their assumptions. Compare what each perspective focuses on, what evidence might support it and what it may overlook. Avoid treating a theoretical perspective as a single slogan that all its writers apply in exactly the same way.
Make research evidence do a job
Keep an evidence bank organised by argument rather than by researcher alone. For each study or example, note the claim it supports, the relevant finding and one limitation. When writing, explain the link between evidence and argument instead of assuming that a name in brackets proves the point.
Bangladesh examples can make ideas meaningful during revision, but avoid presenting personal observations as representative national evidence. Use careful language about variation within groups. In an examination response, choose evidence relevant to the question and distinguish a documented finding from an illustrative example.
Connect method choices to the setting
A method’s usefulness depends partly on the research aim and population. When discussing interviews, observation or questionnaires, explain what information the method could produce and what might prevent an accurate account. Consider access, participant responses, ethics and the researcher’s role.
Compare validity, reliability, representativeness and practical constraints separately. A large sample does not automatically eliminate bias, and numerical data are not automatically objective. Show why a particular feature of the design affects the kind of conclusion a researcher can responsibly draw.
Build A2 essays around a contestable claim
Before writing, turn the question into a claim that can be supported and challenged. Plan a sequence of arguments rather than a sequence of theorists. Each paragraph should make a point, explain it, use relevant evidence and consider a meaningful limitation or alternative.
Evaluation works best when it is integrated. Compare explanations of the same pattern, identify where an argument is strongest, and state the conditions under which a different account may work better. In the conclusion, weigh the debate rather than announcing that every theory is equally useful. Check your selected topics against the current syllabus before practising older questions.
PUT THE IDEA TO WORK
Mini example: evaluate a questionnaire without a stock phrase
Try this: A researcher uses an anonymous questionnaire to study students’ attitudes towards school rules. What is one strength and one limitation?
Anonymity may make students more willing to report criticism because their answers are less directly linked to their identities. Explain that this depends on whether they trust the anonymity.
If the questionnaire uses fixed response choices, these may miss why students hold a view or how they interpret a rule. Open questions or follow-up research could explore that meaning, although they introduce different practical demands.
Take it into your next answer: Link the method to the research aim and participants. Simply calling questionnaires reliable or superficial does not explain this investigation.

Common mistakes—and how to fix them
Listing theorists without answering the question.
Organise paragraphs around arguments and use theorists or studies to support them.
Making sweeping claims about a whole group.
Acknowledge variation and distinguish illustrative examples from representative evidence.
Saving all evaluation for a rushed conclusion.
Test each major argument as it develops, then weigh the overall debate at the end.

easier to organise.
AsifSir.com Sociology sets combine a visual guide to concepts and perspectives, a study guide and 10 mock exam papers. AS and A2 sets are ৳1,800 each. Use the visual connections to plan an argument, then practise writing an independent response supported by relevant evidence rather than reproducing a memorised essay.
AS and A2 are separate sets: ৳1,800 each, or ৳3,600 for both stages.

Your questions, answered
How many sociologists should I mention?+
Use enough relevant evidence to develop the argument. A smaller number of accurately explained studies can be more useful than a long list of names with no analytical role.
Can I use examples from Bangladesh?+
Yes, when they are relevant and accurately described. Label an illustrative example appropriately and avoid treating personal experience as proof of a national pattern.
What should an essay conclusion do?+
Answer the question by weighing the strongest arguments, identifying the most persuasive explanation and recognising the limits of that judgement.
