THE SHORT ANSWER
Learn what each equation assumes, translate unfamiliar situations into diagrams, and practise explanations using precise physical quantities. Develop measurement and data-analysis skills throughout the course. At A2, deliberately connect earlier mechanics, waves and electricity ideas to more advanced models rather than starting revision from zero.
Cambridge A Level Physics becomes more manageable when you stop treating each chapter as a separate collection of equations. A strong answer connects a physical model, a mathematical relationship and a clear explanation of what the result means.
For 9702 students in Bangladesh, the route to an A at AS and an A* at full A Level must include practical work as well as theory. Reading laboratory notes alone cannot develop confident measurement.
Start with a physical model
Before selecting an equation, sketch the system and identify what changes and what remains constant. A moving object, an electrical circuit and an oscillating system each need a defined model. Label quantities with units and decide which effects can reasonably be neglected in the stated question.
At AS, make force diagrams, energy transfers, wave relationships and circuit reasoning dependable. Explain a result in words after calculating it. If your equation predicts that resistance increases when a longer wire is replaced by a shorter identical wire, the explanation should alert you to an error.
Build A2 explanations from familiar ideas
A2 often feels difficult because familiar mathematics appears in less familiar settings. Compare relationships carefully: inverse-square behaviour, exponential change and proportionality each create recognisable graphs. Note both the mathematical similarity and the physical difference between the systems.
For a long explanation, write a causal chain. Identify the change, the relevant principle and the consequence. Avoid jumping from the question directly to a memorised conclusion. When an examiner changes the apparatus or context, the chain remains usable even when your rehearsed sentence does not.
Treat practical skills as examinable reasoning
The official 9702 course includes a timetabled practical examination. Work with your teacher or centre to obtain supervised laboratory practice. Practise reading scales, selecting a sensible range, recording units and maintaining appropriate precision. These habits should become automatic before a timed assessment.
For data analysis, distinguish random scatter from a systematic shift. Explain how an improvement addresses a specific limitation: increasing a measured distance can reduce relative reading uncertainty, while repeating measurements helps assess scatter. A generic instruction to be more careful does not identify an experimental solution.
Review the explanation as well as the number
After marking a question, inspect your definitions, directions, units and significant figures. A numerical answer may hide weak understanding if it came from guessing an equation. Conversely, a wrong final value may follow a sound method with one repairable substitution error.
Use timed multiple-choice and structured practice in separate sessions, then combine them in your weekly plan. For each incorrect option, explain why it fails. Check the syllabus year and component before using old questions, and judge grades using the relevant published thresholds rather than a fixed online percentage.
PUT THE IDEA TO WORK
Mini example: turn a wire calculation into an explanation
Try this: A uniform wire has resistance R. A second wire of the same material and temperature has twice the length and twice the cross-sectional area. What is its resistance?
Use R = ρL/A. The material and temperature keep resistivity ρ unchanged in this model.
The new resistance is ρ(2L)/(2A) = ρL/A = R. Doubling length tends to increase resistance, while doubling area tends to decrease it by the same factor.
Take it into your next answer: Explain the competing changes. “Longer wire means higher resistance” is incomplete when area changes too.

Common mistakes—and how to fix them
Substituting values before converting units.
Write quantities in consistent units before entering numbers into the equation.
Using vague words such as force when you mean energy.
Name the physical quantity and show its role in the causal explanation.
Revising practicals only in the final week.
Practise supervised measurement and graph interpretation throughout the course.
Your four-week revision plan
Use this as a focused revision cycle alongside your lessons. If you are still learning the course, give unfamiliar topics more time before attempting full papers.
- Week 1
Diagnose models
- Attempt short questions across your current topics.
- Build a list of equations with meanings, units and assumptions.
- Week 2
Strengthen explanations
- Write causal explanations for unfamiliar contexts.
- Complete a supervised practical or teacher-guided data task.
- Week 3
Apply under time
- Attempt the theory components appropriate to your stage.
- Review multiple-choice distractors and practical limitations.
- Week 4
Repair and rehearse
- Redo questions involving repeated unit or graph errors.
- Complete a balanced mock session and review every uncertain answer.
YOUR NEXT STEP
Make your revision
easier to organise.
Use the AsifSir.com Physics visual guide to connect diagrams and equations, the study guide to strengthen explanations, and 10 mock exam papers to rehearse applying your knowledge. AS and A2 sets are available separately at ৳1,800 each. Bring questions from your mock review to lessons or practical sessions so each attempt leads to a specific improvement.
AS and A2 are separate sets: ৳1,800 each, or ৳3,600 for both stages.
Independent study resources. Check your board, syllabus code and exam year when choosing your edition. Ten mock papers means ten individual practice papers.
Your questions, answered
Can a visual guide replace laboratory practice?+
No. Diagrams can clarify apparatus and relationships, but supervised practical experience develops the measurement and observation skills required by the course.
Should I memorise every worked solution?+
Memorise essential definitions and relationships where needed, but practise explaining why a method applies. A changed context tests understanding more effectively than recall.
How should AS and A2 revision differ?+
At AS, secure core models and practical habits. At A2, continue those habits while practising longer explanations and connections between advanced topics and earlier principles.
