THE SHORT ANSWER
Learn study details through research questions, methods, findings and limitations. Apply research-methods vocabulary to concrete designs rather than memorising generic strengths and weaknesses. At A2, develop the two specialist options your course follows and connect evidence to the issue in the question.
Psychology revision works best when studies become evidence you can use, rather than names and results you can recite. You need to understand how a finding was produced, what it supports and what its design prevents you from concluding.
For Cambridge 9990, aim for A at AS and A* in the full A Level. Cambridge publishes separate 2024–2026, 2027 and 2028–2030 syllabus materials and reference lists, so confirm the exact studies and options for your examination year.
Build study cards that explain the research
For each required study, record the aim, sample, design, procedure, measured variables, findings and conclusion. Then add a short explanation of why the method matters. Ask which feature strengthens control, which may limit generalisation and what ethical issue is relevant.
At AS, practise retrieving study details accurately without blending similar experiments. Use a comparison table when two studies share a topic but differ in design. A correct evaluation of the wrong procedure will not demonstrate secure knowledge of the study being asked about.
Make research methods practical
Invent small, ethical classroom-style scenarios on paper and specify how you would measure each variable. Replace vague outcomes such as better memory with an operational measure, such as the number of words correctly recalled after a defined delay. The measure should match the question and be feasible.
Distinguish reliability, validity and generalisability. Explain the actual effect of a design choice instead of labelling every laboratory study artificial. High control may help isolate a variable, while a narrow task may limit how confidently you apply the result to everyday behaviour.
Use A2 options to develop focused arguments
Cambridge offers a choice of two specialist options from clinical, consumer, health and organisational psychology. Follow the options taught and entered through your centre. Do not spread revision across every option because an online resource happens to include them all.
Within each chosen option, connect explanations, evidence and applications. When evaluating an intervention or account of behaviour, state the criterion you are using: effectiveness, ethics, practicality or evidential support. Compare alternatives on that same criterion so the judgement is coherent rather than a collection of unrelated criticisms.
Replace generic criticism with a consequence
A useful evaluation names a specific feature and explains how it affects the conclusion. For example, knowing participants are observed may change their behaviour; explain what that means for this task and interpretation. Do not assume the effect without considering the design.
During timed practice, separate description from evaluation visibly in your plan. Answer the command word and use the appropriate level of detail. After marking, check whether every evaluative claim is connected to a study or scenario. Keep published thresholds separate from study targets: no single percentage guarantees the same grade every session.
PUT THE IDEA TO WORK
Mini example: operationalise an unclear variable
Try this: A researcher wants to test whether background noise affects concentration. What would make the dependent variable clearer?
Concentration is too broad to measure directly without a definition. One possible operational measure is the number of errors on the same five-minute proofreading task under specified conditions.
Keep task difficulty, instructions and timing comparable, and consider how order or practice effects could influence results. Error count measures performance on this task; it does not capture every aspect of concentration.
Take it into your next answer: An operational definition makes a study testable, but you still need to discuss whether the chosen measure represents the concept well.

Common mistakes—and how to fix them
Memorising generic strengths and weaknesses.
Attach each point to a named design feature and explain its effect on the conclusion.
Confusing reliability with validity.
Ask separately whether a measure is consistent and whether it measures the intended concept.
Revising studies from the wrong reference list.

Your four-week revision plan
Use this as a focused revision cycle alongside your lessons. If you are still learning the course, give unfamiliar topics more time before attempting full papers.
- Week 1
Check and retrieve studies
- Confirm syllabus year, reference list and A2 options.
- Build study cards and test procedure details without notes.
- Week 2
Apply methods
- Operationalise variables in new scenarios.
- Compare designs using control, validity, reliability and ethics.
- Week 3
Develop option arguments
- Write timed answers using evidence from the required material.
- Connect each evaluative point to a specific consequence.
- Week 4
Correct and rehearse
- Redo answers that mixed studies or used vague criticism.
- Complete a balanced mock across the components for your stage.
YOUR NEXT STEP
Make your revision
easier to organise.
AsifSir.com Psychology sets include a visual guide for study relationships, a study guide and 10 mock exam papers. AS and A2 sets cost ৳1,800 each. Use the resources to retrieve study details and rehearse research-methods reasoning, while checking that your revision follows the official reference list for your examination year.
AS and A2 are separate sets: ৳1,800 each, or ৳3,600 for both stages.
Independent study resources. Check your board, syllabus code and exam year when choosing your edition. Ten mock papers means ten individual practice papers.
Your questions, answered
Do I need to know every number in a study?+
Use the level of detail required by your syllabus and teacher’s guidance. Prioritise accurate findings and the method needed to interpret them, rather than memorising numbers without meaning.
Can everyday experience count as research evidence?+
Personal experience may help you understand an idea, but it is not a substitute for the required studies and evidence when answering an examination question.
How many A2 options should I revise?+
Follow your centre’s selected two options and the current syllabus. Confirm this before organising notes or choosing mock practice.
