THE SHORT ANSWER

To work towards an A or A* in Commerce, connect commercial terms to their functions, follow the movement of goods and information, and apply services to a specific business need. Practise calculations and justify recommendations using cost, reliability, risk and the customer’s requirements.

Commerce makes more sense when you follow a product from producer to customer and ask what allows each stage to happen. Transport, finance, communication and other services solve different problems along that journey.

Cambridge O Level Commerce 7100 has updated content and assessment for 2026–2028, including contemporary commercial practices. Use the current syllabus to decide what to revise. Older notes can be useful, but they should not determine your entire topic list or question expectations.

Follow the whole commercial journey

Take a simple product such as printed books and map how it reaches a buyer. Identify who owns the goods, who moves them, how payment happens and what information travels between the parties. This makes the connections between topics easier to remember.

For each service, state the problem it solves. Storage may help bridge a timing gap; transport moves goods to where they are needed. Then ask what could happen if that service fails. Explaining a consequence is more useful than reciting a definition alone.

Distinguish documents by their purpose

When revising commercial documents, identify who prepares each one, who receives it and what action it supports. Similar-looking documents can have different roles, so learn their place in a transaction rather than only their names.

Create a small transaction story and place the required documents in order where relevant to your syllabus. Check details such as quantities, prices and any corrections. If a document changes, explain how the change affects the buyer, seller or records.

Apply commercial services to the case

A transport recommendation depends on the goods, destination, timing and cost. A communication method depends on urgency, complexity and the need for a record. Do not claim that one option is always best simply because it has a general advantage.

When discussing digital commerce, consider both convenience and the practical demands of fulfilment. An order placed online still needs accurate information, reliable delivery and a way to resolve problems. Link your answer to the business and customer described rather than writing a generic technology paragraph.

Make numerical and written answers support each other

Write the relevant method before calculating a percentage or commercial amount, and keep track of what the base figure represents. Check whether the question concerns cost, selling price, a reduction or an amount outstanding. Similar numbers can require different operations.

Use the result to inform a recommendation when asked. A cheaper option may carry another disadvantage, such as slower delivery or unsuitable handling. Explain the trade-off and identify the factor that matters most for the particular transaction.

PUT THE IDEA TO WORK

Original mini example: choosing delivery

Try this: A seller must deliver a small order of printed revision books within a city by tomorrow. One service is cheaper but takes several days; another costs more and offers next-day delivery. How should the choice be justified?

Start with the customer’s deadline. If delivery by tomorrow is essential, a service that normally takes several days does not meet the stated requirement.

Then consider whether the next-day option is reliable for the destination and whether its charge leaves an acceptable margin. Low cost alone is not enough to decide.

A justified recommendation would favour a suitable service that can meet the deadline, while checking terms and communicating the charge clearly to the buyer.

Take it into your next answer: Match the commercial service to the transaction’s specific constraint.

Your questions, answered

How is Commerce different from Business?+

There is overlap, but Commerce focuses strongly on trade and the activities and services that enable it. Use the subject’s own syllabus and question demands rather than assuming Business notes cover everything.

Can examples from online shops help?+

Yes. They make payment, communication, fulfilment and customer service easier to visualise. In the examination, apply ideas to the actual case and avoid assuming every business operates in the same way.

How should I revise lists of advantages?+

Turn each advantage into a short explanation and attach a situation where it matters. Then identify a case where another factor could outweigh it. This builds application rather than list recall.
