THE SHORT ANSWER
Aim for a 9 in English Language B by practising unseen reading, supported analysis and comparison, then writing with clear purpose and controlled structure. Build an examination time plan that protects every task, including final proofreading.
English Language B asks you to make decisions while reading and writing under time pressure. You must notice what matters in an unfamiliar passage, explain it clearly and still leave enough attention for your own writing. A practical routine matters more than a collection of memorised phrases.
This guide covers 4EB1, the linear English Language B qualification. Its mandatory reading-and-writing examination differs from English Language A. Check the latest specification and sample paper when organising your practice.
Read with two different purposes
On the first reading, establish who is speaking, what is happening and the writer’s overall viewpoint. On the second, select details relevant to the question. Annotating every line in equal detail can use time without improving your answer.
Separate what the passage explicitly says from what you infer. For an inference, identify the evidence that supports it. If several interpretations are possible, choose the one most securely grounded in the wording and context.
Explain how ideas are presented
When analysing language, select a small quotation and explain its specific meaning. When considering structure, look at how information is ordered, where attention shifts and what is delayed or revealed. Do not use a structural term merely because it sounds impressive.
For comparison, choose a common focus and discuss the relationship between the writers’ perspectives or methods. A balanced paragraph does not require identical lengths for both texts, but it should make the comparison explicit.
Write to a reader, not to a checklist of devices
A transactional task needs an appropriate voice, clear organisation and purposeful development. Decide what the reader should think or do after reading. Use examples, reasoning and rhetorical choices where they support that purpose.
A rhetorical question is not automatically persuasive, and a long introduction can delay your argument. Practise producing openings that establish your position quickly, then develop distinct paragraphs rather than repeating the same point with different words.
Keep imaginative writing manageable
Choose a scene, relationship or turning point that you can shape within the examination. A controlled piece with a clear progression is often more effective than an ambitious plot that needs five extra pages. Select details that build atmosphere and reveal character.
Reserve time to edit. Read for missing punctuation, accidental tense changes and sentences that are difficult to follow. Use a model essay to notice an effective choice, then practise that choice with a completely different prompt. The final response should be your own.
PUT THE IDEA TO WORK
Give a persuasive point a reason and a limit
Try this: Write the core of a paragraph arguing that a school should provide a quiet lunchtime study room.
Start with a specific benefit: a supervised quiet room would give students a dependable place to complete concentrated work during lunch.
Develop the reason: students who travel a long distance may have less study time after school, so a short quiet session could help them manage their workload.
Add a realistic condition: the room should remain optional and should not replace time to eat or rest. This makes the proposal more thoughtful than claiming that every student must study throughout lunch.
Take it into your next answer: Persuasion becomes stronger when a clear proposal is developed through relevant reasoning.
