THE SHORT ANSWER
To aim for a 9 in Business, apply concepts to the case, develop clear cause-and-effect chains, use calculations accurately and make justified recommendations. Let the business’s objective and constraints shape your answer rather than relying on a memorised essay.
In Business, knowing a definition is the starting point. Stronger answers explain what an idea means for the particular business in the question. A small bakery with limited cash and a large multinational facing global competition do not have the same priorities.
This guide focuses on the 4BS1 specification. Pearson has announced its final assessment in November 2028 and a replacement qualification taught from September 2027. Students starting the newer course should check its specification before using older papers.
Read the case for useful evidence
Before writing, identify the business’s size, product, customers, objective and main constraint. Select two or three details that matter to the question. Repeating the business name is not the same as using its circumstances in your reasoning.
If a firm sells perishable goods, a stock decision may affect waste. If it serves price-sensitive customers, a price increase may affect demand. Explain that link explicitly instead of adding an unrelated case detail at the end of a generic paragraph.
Develop one argument before adding another
Start with a relevant business idea, connect it to the case and explain the likely consequence. Then ask what that consequence changes for costs, revenue, cash flow, staff or customers. A developed chain is more useful than a list of advantages with no explanation.
Avoid treating every benefit as higher profit. A change may improve revenue but increase costs even more. State the conditions under which your argument is likely to hold, especially when the case provides limited information.
Use numbers to support judgement
Practise percentages, revenue, costs, profit, margins and other calculations required by your specification. Show the formula and the substitution. Then interpret the answer in context: a percentage margin measures a relationship, not the absolute amount of profit.
Check the period and units before comparing figures. A monthly cost and an annual revenue cannot be compared directly without adjustment. When a number supports a recommendation, explain why it matters to the business’s objective.
Make a decision that follows the evidence
For an evaluative question, compare relevant options and decide which is stronger for this business. Your conclusion should do more than repeat both sides. Identify the decisive factor, such as available finance, capacity or the urgency of the problem.
Practise short answer plans before writing full responses. After marking, check whether each paragraph applied evidence and whether the final judgement followed your analysis. Use teacher feedback to improve depth rather than simply increasing length.
PUT THE IDEA TO WORK
Profit is not the same as revenue
Try this: A café sells 200 lunch boxes for ৳150 each. Variable cost is ৳90 per box and fixed costs for the period are ৳8,000. Calculate profit and explain one limitation of the figure.
Revenue is 200 × 150 = ৳30,000. Total variable cost is 200 × 90 = ৳18,000.
Total cost is 18,000 + 8,000 = ৳26,000, so profit is ৳4,000.
The result depends on the assumed sales and cost figures. It does not by itself show when customers pay or whether the business has enough cash to meet a bill today.
Take it into your next answer: Calculate accurately, then explain what the result can and cannot tell the owner.

Common mistakes—and how to fix them
Adding the business name to a generic answer
Use a case detail that changes the consequence or the recommendation.
Assuming higher sales always mean higher profit
Consider the costs of producing and selling the extra output.
Ending with it depends and no decision
Name the most important condition and make a supported judgement using the evidence available.
Your four-week revision plan
Use this as a focused revision cycle alongside your lessons. If you are still learning the course, give unfamiliar topics more time before attempting full papers.
- Week 1
Build case-reading habits
- Read short cases and identify objectives, constraints and useful data.
- Test key terms by explaining them through your own business examples.
- Week 2
Develop analysis
- Write one complete cause-and-effect paragraph for marketing, people and operations.
- Check that each link follows logically from the previous one.
- Week 3
Combine numbers and judgement
- Practise calculations and interpret each answer in a sentence.
- Plan evaluative responses that compare realistic alternatives.
- Week 4
Rehearse the paper
- Complete timed 4BS1 questions and review application separately from recall.
- Rewrite one weak conclusion after identifying the decisive case factor.
YOUR NEXT STEP

Your questions, answered
Do I need a fixed paragraph formula?+
A structure can help you organise ideas, but it should not force every question into the same answer. Follow the command word and the evidence.
Are longer answers always better?+
No. Relevant application and developed reasoning matter more than repetition. Leave time to answer the whole paper.
Should new students use 4BS1 resources?+
Check the entry specification and examination year with the school. Pearson is introducing a replacement course, so choose materials that match the route you will actually take.
