THE SHORT ANSWER
Confirm your exact unit combination, make algebra reliable, practise selecting methods without hints, and use timed papers to find recurring errors. Keep pure and applied mathematics active throughout your revision.
You can understand a solution when your teacher explains it and still freeze when the same idea appears inside an unfamiliar question. Improving in International A Level Mathematics means learning to choose a method, carry it through and check whether the result makes sense.
For students in Bangladesh balancing Maths with several other subjects, short, deliberate problem-solving sessions can be more useful than repeatedly reading completed examples. Aim for an A at AS and build towards an A* in the full A Level; AS itself does not award A*.
Start with your own unit combination
Pearson IAL Mathematics is modular. The usual AS structure includes P1, P2 and an approved applied unit; the full award includes P1–P4 and an approved pair of applied units. Ask your school to confirm your entry and cash-in combination rather than copying a friend’s timetable.
Create a revision page for each unit you are actually taking. Under every topic, record one question you can solve independently and one that still needs attention. A topic becomes secure when you can explain why a method works and use it after a gap, not when a chapter looks familiar.
Make algebra support every later topic
A calculus question can fail because of a fraction error long before the differentiation becomes difficult. Practise factorising, rearranging equations, manipulating indices and handling exact values in small mixed sets. Write intermediate lines instead of expecting your memory to hold every transformation.
Keep an error log that records the decision which caused the mistake: cancelling across addition, losing a negative sign or forgetting a domain restriction. Add a corrected example and a different follow-up question. The goal is to change your next attempt, rather than create a beautiful collection of old mistakes.
Train the first minute of a problem
Before calculating, identify the quantity requested, the information available and a possible route between them. For a maximum problem, define a variable and form the function before differentiating. For an integral, inspect its structure before choosing substitution or integration by parts.
At AS, work on linking familiar techniques into short chains. At A2, spend more time on problems that mix functions, trigonometry and calculus. After solving, ask whether another representation would have helped: a sketch, an exact expression or a substitution. This develops flexibility without relying on memorised question patterns.
Give applied units their own practice
In mechanics, draw a force diagram and state the direction you call positive. In statistics, identify the random variable and its distribution before entering values into a calculator. In decision mathematics, follow the specified algorithm carefully and show its intermediate stages. Revise only the applied units in your confirmed route.
Use a complete timed paper periodically, then separate lost marks into knowledge, method selection, algebra and time management. Reattempt difficult questions without the mark scheme several days later. A higher score on an identical paper immediately after marking mainly shows recall; success on a fresh mixed set is stronger evidence of progress.
PUT THE IDEA TO WORK
Worked example: a stationary point
Try this: For f(x) = x³ − 6x² + 9x + 2, find and classify the stationary points.
Differentiate: f′(x) = 3x² − 12x + 9 = 3(x − 1)(x − 3). Setting f′(x) = 0 gives x = 1 and x = 3.
Use f″(x) = 6x − 12. At x = 1 this is negative, so the point is a local maximum. At x = 3 it is positive, so the point is a local minimum.
Substitute into the original function: the points are (1, 6) and (3, 2). A quick sketch should agree with the classifications.
Take it into your next answer: The question asks for points and classifications, so two x-values alone do not finish the task.

Common mistakes—and how to fix them
Rounding exact values too early
Keep fractions and surds until a decimal answer is requested.
Using a formula without checking conditions
State the model or domain and check that it fits the question.
Revising only pure maths
Schedule the applied unit alongside pure work every week.
Your four-week revision plan
Use this as a focused revision cycle alongside your lessons. If you are still learning the course, give unfamiliar topics more time before attempting full papers.
- Week 1
Audit your route
- Confirm units and identify three recurring algebra errors.
- Attempt one diagnostic set for each current unit.
- Week 2
Repair methods
- Practise mixed algebra and calculus with full working.
- Write short explanations for mechanics or statistics model choices.
- Week 3
Connect topics
- Solve unfamiliar multi-stage problems without topic labels.
- Revisit errors from the first week.
- Week 4
Rehearse and review
- Complete timed papers for your actual entries.
- Use the remaining sessions to repair repeated errors and test them again.
YOUR NEXT STEP
Make your revision
easier to organise.
Build this routine with the AsifSir.com Edexcel AS or A2 Mathematics set: a visual guide, a study guide and 10 original mock exam papers. Each stage costs ৳1,800, or ৳3,600 for both. Choose the stage and unit coverage that match your course.
AS and A2 are separate sets: ৳1,800 each, or ৳3,600 for both stages.

Your questions, answered
Do I need Further Mathematics to get an A* in IAL Maths?+
No. These are separate qualifications. Focus on the required content and approved unit combination for your Mathematics award.
Is there one raw percentage that always means A*?+
No. Raw marks and uniform marks are different, and grade boundaries vary by paper and series. Check Pearson’s rules and published boundaries for the relevant qualification.
How should I use worked solutions?+
Make an honest attempt first. Read only enough to identify the missing step, close the solution and reconstruct the reasoning yourself.
