THE SHORT ANSWER

Aim for A or A* in IGCSE ICT by practising complete software tasks, checking evidence and outputs carefully, and applying theory to the user’s actual needs.

Knowing what a spreadsheet is does not mean you can build the required one under time pressure. Cambridge IGCSE ICT asks you to combine understanding with practical decisions. Strong preparation involves using the software, checking the output and explaining why a solution meets a user’s needs.

If you study in Bangladesh, arrange dependable practice time on a computer as well as time with printed notes. This guide covers Cambridge IGCSE Information and Communication Technology 0417; confirm the syllabus year and the software arrangements with your school.

Practise tasks rather than watching tutorials

Choose a short brief, close the demonstration and carry it out yourself. Create and format a document, build a spreadsheet calculation or produce a database query. If you become stuck, record the exact action you could not perform and practise that action again later.

Save the original files and your completed version separately so you can repeat the task. Repeating a procedure from a blank starting point is a better check than clicking through a file that already contains the solution.

Make spreadsheet formulas explainable

Before entering a formula, describe the calculation in ordinary language. Identify which values should change when the formula is copied and which should stay fixed. This makes relative and absolute references a reasoning task instead of a punctuation memory test.

Check a small sample manually. A neat worksheet can contain a formula that gives plausible but incorrect results. Use suitable test values and inspect copied formulas at the top, middle and bottom of a range.

Treat database work as a question about data

Identify the fields and records needed to answer the brief. Choose suitable field types and think carefully about criteria. A query for students in one class with a score above a threshold requires both conditions, not whichever condition happens to match.

Check the selected records before formatting the output. Sorting, grouping and labels should make the information usable. Keep an eye on whether a task asks for a count, a total or the individual records; these are different outputs.

Check documents and web pages from the reader’s view

Follow the requested layout and formatting consistently. Inspect page breaks, headings, image proportions and alignment. A document that looks acceptable on screen may print badly, so use the appropriate preview and check the whole output.

For a web task, inspect links, file names and paths as well as appearance. Use meaningful structure and test the result in the required environment. Avoid spending extra time on decorative changes that the brief never requested while a required feature remains incomplete.

Connect theory to a specific situation

For a question about security, data handling or a system, identify the people, information and risks involved. Explain how the proposed method helps in that context. A generic advantage such as “it is faster” needs a comparison and a consequence to become useful.

Use the official syllabus to make a checklist of theory and practical skills. During mock practice, follow the current instructions for saving and evidence. Finish with a brief audit of required files and outputs rather than assuming the software has saved everything correctly.

PUT THE IDEA TO WORK

Original practice: a copied spreadsheet formula

Try this: Cell B2 contains a quantity and C2 contains the unit price. A fixed discount rate is stored in F1. What formula calculates the discounted line total in D2 and remains useful when copied down?

The undiscounted total is B2*C2. The fraction remaining after the discount is 1 minus the rate, so the formula is =B2*C2*(1-$F$1).

B2 and C2 are relative references because each row has its own quantity and price. $F$1 is fixed because every row uses the same discount rate.

If quantity is 3, price is 200 and F1 is 0.10, the result is 540. Copy the formula to another row and check that only the quantity and price references move.

Take it into your next answer: A formula should work for the data structure, not only the first row.

Common mistakes—and how to fix them

Practising only software features in isolation

Combine several operations in a realistic brief and check the completed output.

Assuming formatting proves accuracy

Test formulas, query criteria and links separately from their appearance.

Leaving evidence and saving until the last moment

Follow the paper’s instructions as you work, then audit the required files and outputs.

Your four-week revision plan

Use this as a focused revision cycle alongside your lessons. If you are still learning the course, give unfamiliar topics more time before attempting full papers.

  1. Week 1

    Diagnose practical skills

    • Complete one short task in each required application.
    • List the exact operations that slow you down.
  2. Week 2

    Strengthen data handling

    • Practise copied formulas and reference types.
    • Build queries with combined criteria and verify selected records.
  3. Week 3

    Integrate presentation and theory

    • Produce complete documents or web tasks from briefs.
    • Write contextual explanations of security and system choices.
  4. Week 4

    Rehearse the workflow

    • Attempt a timed practical task using the agreed school setup.
    • Check saving, evidence, accuracy and final presentation.

Your questions, answered

Can I prepare using only a phone?+

A phone can help with reading and recall, but it does not replace practice in the computer applications and environment used for the practical assessment.

Which software should I learn?+

Ask your school about its exam arrangements and the current syllabus requirements. Practise the required skills in the software you will actually use.

Should I memorise menu locations?+

Familiarity helps, but understand the purpose of the operation too. That understanding makes it easier to recover if an interface or starting file looks different.
